8th Teesside Individual Junior Chess Championships Gallery

Following on directly from the results we posted earlier, we now present a gallery from the day.

The next chess junior event at Yarm Preparatory School will be the 25th Team Championship, scheduled for October. The details will be circulated at the start of the new school year.

'Are we ready, Mr Harris...?'

'Whose move is it, anyway...?'

8th Teesside Individual Junior Chess Championships Report

The 8th Teesside Individual Junior Chess Championships attracted over 100 entries from a  plethora of schools and clubs.

There were great battles for honours in all four sections, with some big surprise results and lots of excellent concentration and determination shown throughout the busy day.

We even managed to order the sun for the day, despite it making only brief appearances over the last couple of weeks.

Yarm Preparatory School hosted the tournament yet again and the school's staff made everything ready and everyone welcome.

A gallery will follow soon, but today we present the official results.

We never use tie-breakers or play-offs to decide our titles. Shared places simply means we award more trophies and medals.

Everyone received a certificate for attendance and all players finishing in the top three places in each section also received a special certificate to show their place.

As I keep on saying, titles, trophies and medals are all very well but they are never the main point of our tournaments. The most important aspect is that everyone takes part, enjoys the day and comes away with some ideas of how to improve their play.

Well done, everyone!

CSC Training Day Tour 2018-9: London Finale

The finale of the 2018-9 Training Day Tour brought me back to where it all started - the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith.

On that occasion, back in September 2018, we had 10 delegates. This time we had 16, which is clearly a fabulous number.

I was delighted to be able to work once again with my friends and CSC colleagues Chris, Aga and Matt, all of whom helped in various capacities through the day.

All of the delegates worked hard on various tasks, including the mini-games.

Thank you, everyone! It was wonderful to work with you. Let us see what can now achieve together in your respective schools and communities.

Tour concluded!

CSC Training Day Tour 2018-9: Middlesbrough

Following successful tour dates in London (several), the Isle of Arran, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Newcastle, Hull and Leeds, the penultimate date of the school year brought me back home to Teesside.

We were very pleased to be able use the excellent facilities at the Middlesbrough Community Learning Centre once more. The extremely friendly and helpful staff always give exactly the s
ort of impression one should expect from Teesside.

Each of the delegates brought their own unique skills and talents to the show. They ranged from teachers to club players; from parents to translators. Each person was united by the desire to learn more about teaching chess so they could go on to make a difference.

The delegates worked hard on a variety of mini-games and other exercises. The mini-games always sound simple when first introduced, but when delegates play them they are drawn fully into the action.

Of course, when it comes to playing real games of chess, some players are always going to be better at tactics than others. Here is Nick, showing how to fork a king and queen.

We had a fine day and it was fabulous to work such keen and wonderful people.

Thank you, everyone!

Now the CSC Training Day Tour of 2018-9 is almost over and there is just a single date remaining. Back to London we go...

Event Announcement (3): Game Changer

Chess for Life, Yarm School, 2018
Our third event announcement of the week is the reveal that we are bringing Grandmaster Matthew Sadler and Woman International Master Natasha Regan back to Teesside for a very special Project 30 event.

Last year's Chess for Life event was one of our best-ever chess days here on Teesside (the reports can be found here). Matthew and Natasha now have a new and very highly regarded book to talk about, called Game Changer.

I recently wrote a series of blog posts about Game Changer over at the Delancey UK Schools' Chess Challenge website and they can be found here.

In addition to interactive lectures about Game Changer, there will also be a simultaneous display and a signing session.

This event, which will take place at Yarm Preparatory School on Saturday 22 June 2019, is invitational. I have invited numerous seniors and juniors and more invitations will be sent out once the specified time has lapsed on the initial wave.

Given that the 9th CSC Team Tournament and the brand new
Teesside International Women’s Invitation Chess Championship are on consecutive days, to be followed immediately by Game Changer, it is clear to see we are in for an extremely busy week on Teesside.

Event Announcement (2): Teesside International Women’s Invitation Chess Championship

We are delighted to announce details of another brand new event.

Teesside International Women’s Invitation Chess Championship
Supported by the English Chess Federation

Dates: Thursday 20 – Friday 21 June

Venue: The Links Primary School

Players:

Agnieszka Milewska (Poland)

Jo Hutchinson (England)

Raphaele Schmitz-Hastings (France)

Gulbahor Hamdamova (Uzbekistan)

Rayelynn Posadas (Philipines)

Format Day One: All-play-all tournament with 25 minutes per clock.

Format Day Two: The chess players will work with groups of children at The Links Primary School, acting as mentors, tutors and role models.

This event, which is supported by the English Chess Federation, has many aims, including:

  • The creation of a new international tournament.
  • Impacting on the school children and community of Teesside.
  • Raising the profile of women’s chess and providing the children with role models.
  • Celebrating the contribution of overseas women to English chess.

The players in this brand new Teesside International Women’s Invitation Chess Championship will be playing for the Vera Menchik Memorial Trophy.

Vera Menchik, born in Moscow in 1906, moved to England in 1921. She became the first Women’s World Chess Champion in 1927 and went on to successfully defend her title six times. Menchik was still the reigning champion when, very unfortunately, she was killed during the war when a V1 rocket hit her London home. She was just 38 years old.

Despite her short life, Vera Menchik became a role model and inspiration for female chess players everywhere, with her regular appearances at the famous Hastings tournament having a particular impact on chess in England.

The trophy for the Women’s Chess Olympiad is called the Vera Menchik Cup and she had a further honour bestowed upon her when she was inducted to the World Chess Hall of Fame in 2011.

Chris Fegan, ECF Director of Women's Chess said:

'This is a fantastic new initiative which I am delighted to support and highlights the contribution made by overseas women to English chess over decades and keeps alive the spirt of Vera Menchik. The event is the type of example of new innovate and "out of the box" thinking that is needed in English chess to move the game forward in England and to try to stop the decline of the game which we have seen in recent times.

English chess needs to reinvent and reinvigorate itself to make out attractive to new players both in a social and competitive arena and we need to do more and more to encourage women of all ages to play socially and competitively.

It is vital that we promote chess as a game for women and to help do so we need to move away from the old style, outdated and outmoded image and indeed often reality of chess as something played by middle aged men in the upstairs back rooms of back street pubs."
