MP Visit to Mill Lane

Mill Lane Primary School, in Stockton-on-Tees, enjoyed the visit of their local MP, Alex Cunningham, in their chess session today.

Alex helped the children solve some checkmate problems on the big board and then went around the boards to watch the children play.

Henry's Checkmate

Here is an interesting moment from one of the games in this week's Yarm Preparatory School House Chess Championship.

Henry, whose favourite piece is the bishop (and whose favourite tactic is the pin) played ...Bf3 in the first position, intentionally sacrificing his rook on a2.

After Qxa2, he checkmated the white king with ...Rd1!

Note that the knight on f2 cannot capture the rook, as it is pinned to the king by the other bishop on h4.

Well played, Henry!
