Today we had the inaugural Teesside Megafinal - the second stage of the Delancey UK Chess Challenge.
Yarm School, who already host the Teesside Individual Championships (Summer) and the Teesside Team Championships (Autumn), bravely hosted the Megafinal too.
All of the children had to play very well in the initial part of the tournament to qualify for the Megafinal.
Holding a Megafinal on Teesside saved lengthy journeys for all concerned and the truncated timetable - meaning a finishing time of approximately 3.00 p.m. rather than 5.00 p.m. - saved valuable weekend time for parents, teachers and children alike.
A clash with the Middlesbrough football match led to some children having to make a very tough choice, and not one as one-sided as expected: some chose chess, some chose football.
We had over 130 entries and sections for U-7, U-8, U-9, U-10, U-11 and Over-11. The top boys and girls in each section were crowned Supremos and Supremas.
Everyone scoring 4/6 or more qualified for the next stage of the tournament - the Manchester Gigafinal.
We presented big trophies to all of the section winners, rosettes to all of the youngest players (U-7s, U-8s and U-9s) and all competitors received a certificate.
